Brazilian NBR 14136 standard – an overview
Brazil historically used the USA pattern plug, but in 1998 introduced a new standard, based on a modification of IEC 60906.
The new plugs became compulsory in 2010, although some older installations may still only have the older sockets, especially in rural areas.
Nevertheless, the NBR14136 is the only plug type that can be sold or exported into Brazil. There are two options on the plug or socket: a 10 Amp version with 4mm diameter pins, and a larger 20 Amp with 4.8mm pins for higher current use.
Whilst visually similar, the Brazilian plug is not interchangeable with the Swiss, IEC 60906 or South African plugs, as the earth pins are different sizes and in different locations; it is not compatible with any other country and can only be used in Brazil
