Danish DK 107-2 – Denmark, Greenland and Faroes

Demko plugs and Demko cable are rated 250V AC and up to 16 Amps (13A, 10A, 6A, and 2.5A are the lower options). The Danish plug can be recognised by its short semicircular earth pin, giving the socket a ‘smiley face’ appearance. The live and neutral contacts in the socket are set back from the ground, so that despite being shorter the earth pin will always be the first to make and last to break contact.

In the DK107 standard, the line and neutral pins are 4.8mm diameter and 19mm apart, which is the same as used on the other European plugs used in the rest of Scandinavia. However these other types are not earthed or approved if used in Denmark, so for class I (grounded) applications a Danish plug must be specified and used if exporting to the Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The Danish type plug, or type K plug, is used exclusively in the Kingdom of Denmark and its constituent nations of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Denmark the Nordic country comprises the Jutland peninsula and the Danish Archipelago of over 1,400 islands.

Despite only being used in three countries, we still hold a few thousand parts in stock, as part of our commitment to outstanding customer service and guarantee supply and overnight delivery to our clients. Denmark uses 230 V mains supply, but one of the local names (‘220V stik’) reflects the historic mains voltage.

Danish Hospital grade

Are you exporting medical equipment to Jutland, Copenhagen, Zealand or the Danish islands?  Hospital equipment and especially life support is powered from a hospital’s dedicated mains circuit with backup power, which means critical machines keep working during power outages.

These medical circuits will only accept the Afsnit DK-2-8a medical plug.  This has one square and one round pin, to prevent non-medical equipment from being plugged into the critical equipment circuit and causing problems such as flattening the emergency batteries.

Danish Data plug

As a stockist of rarer types, Morvan also offers the specialist Danish data plug.  Some offices and data centres in Denmark have dedicated surge-protected ‘clean’ circuits to protect computers which might be sensitive to power spikes and surges.

The plugs have narrower rectangular live and neutral pins, so the sockets prevent standard plugs with round pins from being plugged in and potentially overloading the circuit or create electrical noise (data plugs will work in normal sockets).

The standard is described in Demko Afsnit DK-2-5a and is also known as EDB or Elektronisk Databehandling Stikke (electronic data handling plugs).

DEMKO

All our high-quality Danish products are manufactured to Dansk Standard Afsnit 107-2-D1. Approval is by the Danish approvals body Demko, the national body, whose D-mark logo is a ‘D’ in  a circle. This format was agreed with Norway and Sweden in 1926, whose Nemko (N) and Semko (S) marks have the same layout; Finland’s Fimko (FI) also follows this format. Denmark was the first country in the world to mandate safety approval for electrical items.

‘Demko’ is an acronym of its original name, the Danmarks Elektriske Materiel Kontrol, (‘Denmark’s Electrical Equipment Control’), a private company incepted in 1928 and operating under the Copenhagen Lighting Authority and Danish Electricity Works Association. In 1964 Demko was nationalised, when ownership passed to the Danish state and they gained their own full-time staff and laboratory.

Regulatory changes upon joining the European Community in 1978 removed Demko’s monopoly on safety approval in Denmark, and it was decided in 1993 to privatise the company. Demko has been owned by the American test house Underwiriters Laboratories since 1996, and now trades under the name UL International Demko A/S, but the D-mark remains unchanged.

The Nordic Certification Service jointly operated by Denmark (Demko), Finland (Fimko), Norway (Nemko), and Sweden (Semko) means all are easily accepted in Denmark to prove conformance of electrical products to the correct standard. Culturally, however, Demko is the most widely accepted, and often a customer requirement.
