European CEE7

All Morvan Trading EU main leads are tested and approved by VDE, TUV, KEMA, and/or ENEC, guaranteeing the highest quality.

With EU inter-recognition of approvals bodies, one European approval is recognised in all states, and VDE has become the de facto standard, although in recent years ENEC is gaining ground as the default approval.

Please note we have used the name ‘Schuko’ on this page to refer to CEE7/7 plugs for convenience, where strictly it only applies to CEE7/3 sockets and CEE7/4 plugs; it is also a trade name.

We use the Longwell LP-33N, LP-33, and LP-33A for angled Euro; straight is the LP-34AN. The Europlug is the Longwell LP-21, with the Kontour / contour LP-25.

The unearthed 2-pin Europlug (or type C plug) is used everywhere in continental Europe except the UK.

The earthed CEE7/7 hybrid plug is used everywhere on the continent except Denmark, Italy, Switzerland and the UK, which have their own national standards – see individual country pages.

The CEE7 standard is also used in many other countries including South Korea, north and central African countries, French overseas territories, and as GOST 7396 in Russia and ex-Soviet states.

CEE7 generally has 4.8mm diameter pins, centres 19mm apart, and is rated 16A 250V AC.

• The CEE7/1 socket and CEE7/2 plug are unearthed, and are being phased out in favour of earthed versions.
• The CEE7/3 socket (type F socket) and CEE7/4 plug (type F plug) is the German standard DIN 49440 and DIN 49441 ‘Schuko’ plug with two earthing contacts on both plug and socket, and is unpolarised.  Schuko is short for Schutzkontact or ‘protective contact’, meaning it is earthed.
• CEE7/5 socket (type E socket) and CEE7/6 plug (type E plug) are the French standard NF C 61-314 with an earth pin projecting from the socket, with corresponding receptacle.  As well as France it is also used in Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
• CEE7/7: because of the incompatability of the French and German systems, the CEEVII/VII hybrid plug has a dual-earthing system to work in both types of sockets.  Morvan Trading stocks the CEE7/7 as standard to prevent any problems when exporting.
• CEE7/16 Europlug is unearthed and unpolarised with 4mm diameter pins, rated at 2.5A 250V AC, and described in EN50075 and IEC60083.  The Europlug will fit any European socket, along with any country that has adopted it for class II use, including Switzerland, Denmark and Italy.
• The CEE7/17 Contour or Kontur plug is essentially an unearthed Schuko or hybrid plug, shaped to fit around the socket’s earthing pins or contacts and will fit into all sockets.

Some countries have additional requirements, for example childproof safety shutters on the sockets.

Older sockets in Russia and Eastern Europe may only accept plugs with narrower 4mm diameter pins, which we can supply on request.
