Bulk Universal Mains Cable
Universal cable is a flexible mains flex that meets more than one standard and is specifically designed for export. This allows a single cord to be shipped worldwide without having to keep different spec mains cord for different locations. It is sometimes called combination cable, combo cable, dual rated cable and multi rated cable. Another name is H05VV-F SJT or SJT H05VV-F but it actually covers more specifications than this, as below.
We stock two products that meet this global spec, both 3 core and colour black: a smaller one rated 10A, and a larger rated 16A / 18A depending on location. Other sizes can be manufactured on request.
17 AWG 1.04mm H05VV-F SJT universal power cord
The first is 300V 10A rated, 17/3 )3 core 17 AWG) (1.04mm) SJT for North America, 3g1mm H05VV-F for most of the world, and 3g1mm IEC 53 RVV for China. It has specific approvals for use in Australia (NSW), Europe (VDE, KEMA), Japan (PSE-JET), Korea (KC / KTL), China (CCC), North America / USA (UL), and Canada (CSA).
Historically it was 18 AWG (0.824mm) instead of 17 AWG (1.04mm), which was slightly thinner than 1mm, despite the same 10 amp current rating. In reality, the cable would have been 1.00mm and only down-rated to 0.824mm on paper, but the discrepancy lead to a contradictory specification, and also safety concerns. Therefore this lead to the introduction of an intermediary ‘odd’ wire size between 18 and 16 AWG. 16AWG is larger again (at 1.31mm and 13A), but can also be down-rated to 1mm for use outside North America at 10A.

14 AWG 2.00mm SJT H05VV-F combination cable
The other stock product is larger but also 300V. It is rated at 18A for North America and Japan, then 16A for the rest of the world. It is 14/3 SJT (2.08mm) for North America, 3 x 2.00 mm HVCTF for Japan, 3 g 1.5 mm IEC 53 RVV for China, and 3 g 1.5 mm H05VV-F for everywhere else. Approvals are covered for Australia (NSW), Europe (VDE, KEMA), Korea (KC / KTL), China (CCC), North America / USA (UL), Canada (CSA), and Japan (PSE JET).

We also supply the intermediate size to special order, in 100m reels only. This is 15 AWG (1.65mm, down-rated to 1.5mm), and rated 16A. For larger jobs the next two sizes up are also available in 100m reels, 13 AWG (2.63 mm (2.50 mm)), and 11 AWG (4.17 mm).
On all these cables, the core colours for each conductor’s insulation are the international harmonised (HAR) colours of brown (line), light blue (neutral), and green with a yellow stripe (earth). These are also acceptable in North America under UL60950 and (for medical devices) 60601. Some American portable cords have a filler between the cores and outer jacket, but all universal power cords and combination cables are of fillerless construction.

Our universal products are suitable for domestic, commercial, light industrial and temporary outdoor use. To comply with the various standards it is manufactured to the highest or largest of all the different specifications. As a result it ends up tougher, more temperature and UV resistant, and harder wearing than standard flexes. This makes it a safe choice and ideal for applications where the end use is unknown, either for required approvals, or environmental constraints. The downside is increased manufacturing and certification costs, which must be factored in if prcing is critical. However, it will still be cheaper than using two or more different but similar product lines depending on end use.
