Taiwanese CNS 10917 – Taiwan

Taiwanese-approved plugs and mains leads are used solely in the Republic of China: from Taiwan and New Taiwan in the north, Taiping on the main island of Formosa, and the smaller island groups of Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu and Pratas.

Taiwan was ruled by Japan from 1895 to 1945, so used the same pattern mains power plug, originally based on the North American type. Close military and economic ties with the USA during the Cold War meant the plug pattern was retained, but with independent national standards and approvals.

Are Japanese and Taiwanese plugs the same?

The specifications for the two are functionally near-identical; likewise for the cable. However, the approvals are different: only BSMI approved products may legally be imported or sold.

Mains electricity distribution in Taiwan is very reliable, but recent moves toward denuclearisation have meant greater reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Taiwanese CNS 10917 – Taiwan

According to the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs, “The UL safety certification is not considered sufficient to meet Taiwan requirements for end product safety certification.  Home appliances, certain fire fighting products, electrical power distribution devices (including cables and switches), lighting products for indoor use and motors require safety testing or inspection in Taiwan.” 

It is also worth noting that Taiwan, as the Republic of China on the island of Formosa, is completely separate from the mainland or the Peoples’s Republic of China: the 3-pin plugs are not interchangeable, and approvals bodies are different.  Domestic voltage is 110V at 60 Hz for Taiwan, as opposed to 220V 50Hz in mainland China. 

Whilst very similar, Japan uses 100V 50/60Hz.  In summary, Chinese-type plugs are not compatible, and whilst Japanese and some USA-type plugs may be compatible, they are not approved.

Taiwanese plugs and sockets are manufactured to Chinese National Standard CNS 10917 (General Rules for Power Cord Sets) and CNS 6797, and quality approval is by BSMI, the Bureau of Standards Metrology and Inspection. IEC connectors are under CNS 690 (Connectors for Wiring). The 2 pin TW1-15P is under CNS10917-3 (Separate Power Cord Sets), and CNS 60799 (Electrical Accessories – Power Cord Sets and Interconnected Power Cord Sets); and the 3 pin grounded TW5-15P is under the more recent CNS10917-6.

The approvals mark is a right-facing arrow in a circle, which must be permanently attached to the product in non-perishable material. There is no set size, but it must be conspicuous, appropriately sized, and in the correct proprtion. The exact design and a lookup function can be found on the BSMI website.
