Swiss plugs to have partially insulated pins for increased safety

by | Apr 5, 2019

As of 31st December 2012, all Swiss type 11 (2 pin 10A) and type 12 (3 pin 10A) plugs must now have partially insulated live and neutral pins.

Newer type 12 sockets are recessed to make accidental contact impossible, but there are still many older installations where a partially inserted plug poses a risk of electric shock as the pins are still accessible when partially inserted.

The situation is the same as the 2005 requirement for Australia.

The non-recessed sockets were permitted for sale until 31st December 2016, when we withdrew from the market along with any old type plugs manufactured or imported before 31st December 2012.

All of Morvan’s Swiss products comply with the requirement for partially insulated pins and recessed sockets.

Why partially insulated Swiss plug pins matter

Partially insulated pins reduce the exposed conductive area when a plug is inserted or removed. If an older, non-recessed socket allows the live and neutral pins to remain accessible during partial insertion, the insulated sleeves provide an additional barrier against accidental contact. Recessed sockets and insulated pins therefore work together as complementary safety measures.

Key points for equipment suppliers

  • Swiss Type 11 and Type 12 plugs should use partially insulated live and neutral pins.
  • Older flat, non-recessed sockets may still be encountered, so current plug construction remains important.
  • Plug type, current rating and the connector fitted at the equipment end should all be checked before ordering.

See our guide to Swiss SEV 1011 plugs and power cords for the available plug types, ratings and cable options. Morvan Trading can also help identify a compliant lead from the equipment specification, required current and destination market.
