New Brazilian plugs and sockets
In 2002, Brazil created a standard for a new type of mains power plug, based on IEC 60906.
There are some differences including 10A and 20A versions making them not interchangeable with IEC60906, and the new standard is called NBR 14136.
This became compulsory in 2010 for all new equipment imported to have new plugs and for new wiring installations to have the new type of socket.
Historically using different USA and European plug types, split phase power and different voltages, this is an attempt to standardise plugs and sockets while making them safer.
Morvan Trading has stocked the new type of Brazilian since long before the 2010 transition date.
Understanding new Brazilian plugs and sockets
NBR 14136 created a consistent national plug and socket system after a period in which several imported formats were encountered. Although the design is related to IEC 60906, the Brazilian 10A and 20A versions have their own dimensions and must be selected correctly. The different pin sizes help prevent a higher-current plug being used with a socket that is not intended for it.
What exporters should confirm
- Select the correct 10A or 20A plug for the equipment load.
- Confirm the local supply voltage because voltage can vary by location within Brazil.
- Match the approved cable and appliance connector to the plug and equipment rating.
- Use NBR 14136 products intended for Brazil rather than a similar-looking international plug.
